Welcome

Slow Food Austin is about...

Recognizing that the enjoyment of wholesome food is essential to the pursuit of happiness, Slow Food USA is an educational organization dedicated to stewardship of the land and ecologically sound food production; to the revival of the kitchen and the table as centers of pleasure, culture, and community; to the invigoration and proliferation of regional, seasonal culinary traditions; to the creation of a collaborative, ecologically-oriented, and virtuous globalization; and to living a slower and more harmonious rhythm of life.

Upcoming Slow Session

July 1st

Film Viewing

6:30-9:00pm (Movie starts at 7:00pm)

The Real Dirt on Farmer John

The Real Dirt on Farmer John will turn every idea you ever had about what it means to be an American farmer, or an American dreamer, on its head. Meet Farmer John, the incredible human being whose inspirational story of revolutionizing his family farm and redeeming his own life has won accolades and awards at film festivals around the world.

Director Taggart Siegel of Collective Eye made the film in a most unusual way – shooting farmer John Peterson over 25-years of their evolving friendship, and using multiple media, from 8 mm home movies to modern video -- allowing him to capture his alternately humorous, heartbreaking and spirited life with raw drama and intimacy.

The movie will begin at 7:00pm and will end around 8:30pm.  We will have some time at the end for discussion and will end the session at 9pm so folks can get home if they need to.

*A small selection of fresh snacks & beverages will be provided by Slow Food.  Feel free to bring additional food or beverage for yourself or you can contribute to the "snack table" if you want to share your food with others.  We'd love to try something from your garden or snack on your favorite local goodies with you.

Location-

Habitat Suites

500 East Highland Mall Boulevard

Austin, Texas 78752

(Map)

*When you arrive at the hotel, you can wait in the lobby or let the front desk know that you are there for a Slow Food meeting and they will direct you to our meeting room. If you would like to come early and partake of Habitat’s happy hour buffet in the dining area, it is $15.00. Slow Food Nation Strives to be a Zero Waste Event

In conjunction with the City of San Francisco’s Department of the Environment, Slow Food Nation is promoting a Zero Waste Program to recycle and compost event items like building materials, plates and flatware, food waste and packaging. Slow Food Nation will be audited by the Department of the Environment and is aiming for a high, successful ratio of compost to landfill waste.

Composting at Slow Food Nation will be both interactive and informative and will serve the dual purpose of raising waste-awareness, including highlighting the City of San Francisco’s current composting program and illustrating compost-science.

Slow Food Nation is working with alternative energy providers to use clean energy at the event and with carbon-offset agencies to reduce our carbon footprint.
